Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccine Products
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus affecting the lungs, nose, and throat that is spread through direct contact, such as inhaling viral droplets from others or touching contaminated surfaces. Annual outbreaks in the United States often peak in the fall and winter. RSV can affect anyone, but it is of most concern for infants, older adults, and individuals with chronic medical conditions or compromised immune systems. Those with RSV can recover within a week or two; however, RSV can be serious and result in hospitalization or even death, especially among high-risk groups. RSV symptoms in mild cases include sore throat, sneezing, dry cough, headache, runny or congested nose, and a low-grade fever. Severe cough, fever, bluish skin color, rapid breathing, or wheezing are signs of more severe RSV symptoms. Bronchiolitis or pneumonia can result from severe RSV. RSV vaccines are approved for adults aged 60 and older and are recommended to prevent RSV morbidity and mortality. Monoclonal antibody products are encouraged for infants and young children to protect them from RSV and severe illness.
