More human rabies exposures reported: Order vaccines, immune globulin through FFF

Though the summer months — typically peak rabies season — are winding down, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued a health advisory regarding the increase of reported human exposures to rabid or potentially rabid animals.
The CDC received 17 percent more rabies-related inquiries, which included mass exposure events, from July through August this year compared to the same period in 2025. At least eight states reported increased rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) use and/or PEP administration errors.
An estimated 1.4 million Americans seek medical evaluation after suspicious animal contact every year. Of those, about 100,000 people receive rabies PEP. As of Sept. 2, rabies vaccine and immune globulin usage are both up this year compared to last year. Rabies vaccines usage increased 33 percent; rabies immune globulin usage increased 76 percent.
