Acute respiratory illness causing individuals to require health care is very high for the first time this flu season, according to the CDC's latest report on Jan. 5. Influenza and RSV activity is elevated. COVID-19 also is increasing from low levels.

The CDC states flu activity is up 32.9 percent with 33,301 patients admitted to hospitals with influenza this week. Additionally, 32 states/jurisdictions are reporting high levels of respiratory illness compared to 22 the previous week.

The CDC's in-season severity assessment framework classified this flu season as moderately severe for the first time. So far, the CDC estimates there have been 11 million illnesses, 120,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths from flu this season. Nine pediatric deaths related to the flu have been reported.

CDC recommends that anyone 6 months and older who has not yet been vaccinated this season get an annual influenza vaccine.
