Curbing the Measles Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2000, the U.S. declared the elimination of measles, but with a continuous number of international travelers bringing the disease into the U.S., combined with pockets of unvaccinated U.S. communities, more than 800 individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 23 states since the beginning of this year.

As a highly contagious disease, measles remains a significant cause of death among young children globally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "routine measles vaccination for children, combined with mass immunization campaigns in countries with low routine coverage, are key public health strategies to reduce global measles deaths."

Currently, measles outbreaks (defined as three or more cases) have been declared in New York state, Rockland County; New York City; Michigan; New Jersey; California, Butte County; California, LA County; California, Sacramento County; Georgia; Maryland; and Pennsylvania.

WHO recommends immunization for all susceptible children and adults for whom measles vaccination is not contraindicated. By administering the MMR or MMRV vaccines, we can protect our communities together and prevent further measles outbreaks.
