CDC Says 2018-19 Flu Vaccine Highly Effective

February 19, 2019

Good news for doctors and your patients!

According to the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the overall vaccine effectiveness (VE) of the 2018-19 flu vaccine was 47 percent. This marks an uptick in VE from the past two years when it was only 40 percent effective.

Dr. Joshua Doyle, an epidemic intelligence service officer in the CDC's Flu Division, says "overall, 47 percent tells us that the vaccine is working. It's encouraging. It's reassuring that the vaccine is doing its job."

CDC continues to recommend immunization while flu viruses are still in circulation and on the rise. The vaccine can prevent illness, hospitalization, and death associated with currently circulating influenza viruses, or other influenza viruses that might circulate later in the season.
