Number of U.S. Flu Deaths Continues to Rise

According to reports from multiple states across the nation, the number of flu-related deaths has continued to rise, despite the official end to flu season on March 31st. In San Diego County, there were eight flu-related deaths reported this past week, bringing the total deaths to 334 and total number of flu cases to 20,404. This is in stark comparison to last year's 2016-2017 flu season, which saw a total of 6,810 cases and 87 deaths. On the East Coast, North Carolina reported a total of 362 flu-related deaths, which is up from the 2016-2017 count of 218. Similarly, the state of Oklahoma is reporting that the number of flu-related deaths has now exceeded 270, which is the highest number of fatalities since the Oklahoma Department of Health began tracking the virus in 2009. Based on past seasons, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) projects that a flu season can last anywhere from 11 to 20 weeks, so it is not surprising that we are still seeing a peak in influenza activity across the country.
So what happens if you come down with the flu? It is strongly suggested that those who are sick with the flu should stay home from work or school. Otherwise, there is a risk of spreading the virus to others, and while one person may experience relatively mild symptoms, those same symptoms could be deadly to someone else. As this current season has shown, 95 percent of the individuals who died as a result of flu-related complications had other underlying health problems.
