The mortality rate for 2017-2018 continues to rise, with the number of pediatric deaths from flu-related complications now up to 30, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as of January 19. Reuters reports that, "Of the 30 U.S. children who have died from the flu so far this season, some 85 percent likely will not have been vaccinated, said [CDC] Director Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald." CDC estimates that based on early data collected during the beginning of the 2017-2018 flu season, only approximately 38 percent of the U.S. population received a flu vaccination. While the average healthy adult may not feel the need or urgency to get vaccinated, it's important that everyone is educated on the fact that getting the flu vaccine is just as much about protecting others around them as it is about protecting the themselves.
