The 2017-18 flu season has officially arrived. According to a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Clinical Advisory report, "in California and throughout the United States (U.S.), influenza activity has increased significantly over recent weeks with influenza A(H3N2) viruses predominating so far this season." And, although we are seeing very high levels of flu activity now, it's not too late to vaccinate since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends continued vaccination efforts since peak flu activity in the U.S. usually occurs around February.

The report goes on to explain that, thus far, most influenza specimens have been classified as A(H3N2), which in the past have been the virus-predominant influenza seasons associated with "more hospitalizations and deaths in persons aged 65 years and older and young children." CDPH says that "all influenza viruses ...that have been antigenically characterized have matched the strains included in the vaccine for this season."
