Most people get their flu vaccination every year, but do they fully understand the reason why it's important to do this? The truth is, the influenza virus changes every year, which renders the previous year's vaccination useless. That is the main reason the virus is so tricky to fight each year, and why a new vaccination has to be created and manufactured annually. The World Health Organization (WHO) gets together two times a year, meeting once for the Northern Hemisphere, and once for the Southern Hemisphere, examines influenza surveillance, and decides the strains they predict will be prevalent and cause the most illness. Even when the vaccine isn't a complete match to the virus that is circulating, it still provides the individual with protection, since their body is given some sense of what viruses are out there.
On December 13th, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a new estimate that each year, between 291,000 and 646,000 people die worldwide from seasonal influenza related complications. This number is higher than the previous estimate of 250,000 to 500,000, which was based on a multinational survey. This new estimate comes from data that is more recent, and from a more diverse group of countries than previously considered. Joe Bresee, M.D., associate director for global health in CDC's Influenza Division, affirms that "These findings remind us of the seriousness of flu and that flu prevention should really be a global priority." Since the virus mutates each year, it is imperative that people receive a vaccination before each flu season-especially individuals in higher risk groups.
