Flu Season is Here-Is it too Late to get Vaccinated?

While it's true that we are in the midst of flu season, it's not too late for individuals to get an influenza vaccination. Flu season can last for 3 months, and in the past, has lasted well into the beginning of the New Year. Furthermore, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) "several flu activity indicators were higher than is typically seen for this time of year. Seven states reported widespread flu activity, 18 states reported regional flu activity and 18 states reported local influenza activity." Since the vaccination takes about two weeks before it begins to protect the individual against the virus, it is imperative that people receive a vaccination as soon as possible. By getting a flu vaccination, individuals are not only protecting themselves from contracting the virus, but they are also protecting anyone else they come in contact with, and stopping the virus from spreading.

The CDC provides a weekly update on flu activity in the United States, and the more recent reports show that flu activity is still very much on the rise.

While just a week apart, the flu activity map of the week ending December 2nd shows a significant amount of new states with influenza activity, and several states that have shifted from local activity to regional and widespread activity.
