International Flu Activity is on the Rise
September 29, 2017
Australia is already in the midst of an aggressive flu season, with more than 93,000 confirmed flu cases thus far since August 18, which is two-and-a-half times as many cases as the same period last year. According to these reports, adults over 80 years of age and children between 5 and 9 years of age have been most affected. Of these cases, 52 deaths have been reported, which is up from 27 at the same time last year.
A rise in flu activity in the Southern Hemisphere usually indicates the type of season that is headed toward the Northern Hemisphere. The United Kingdom is bracing itself for the approaching flu season, and has been urging citizens to get a flu vaccination sooner rather than later. Residents of the United States should take heed as well, and prepare themselves for a forceful 2017-18 flu season.
The latest international flu activity map, provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows the increased amount of activity in the Southern Hemisphere, with activity progressing toward the Northern Hemisphere.
