CDC Released Flu Activity Report for 2016-17 Season

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released an updated influenza activity report for the United States during the 2016-2017 season. Overall, activity remained low through November, but began to increase in December, with a peak in February throughout the nation. During this peak in flu activity, the influenza A virus was predominant; however, from March through May, the influenza B virus was most prevalent.

The CDC also reported that there were 101 pediatric deaths that were influenza-related for the 2016-2017 season. This is the first time since the 2014-2015 season that the number of reported deaths has been over 100. In past seasons, 80 to 85 percent of flu-associated pediatric deaths have been in children who were not vaccinated. Flu vaccination has been reported to reduce the risk of death by 51 percent among high-risk children, and close to 65 percent among healthy children. It is important for parents to have all of the facts so that they can help keep their children healthy during the upcoming 2017-2018 flu season.
