Beat the Flu During National Influenza Vaccination Week

This week is National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW)! In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established NIVW with the goal of highlighting the importance of getting vaccinated against the flu through the holiday season. Another goal of NIVW is to "communicate the importance of flu vaccination for people who are at high risk of developing serious flu-related complications." This week's news announcement will focus on an age group that is at higher risk this flu season.

Coming down with the flu can result in symptoms ranging from a cough and sore throat, to a fever and body aches. However, as the human body ages, the immune system gets weaker, which is why adults 65 and older have a higher risk of suffering serious complications from the flu, such as pneumonia and hospitalization. CDC estimates "that between about 70 percent and 85 percent of seasonal flu-related deaths in the United States have occurred among people 65 years and older."

A recent study by CDC showed that vaccinating adults between 65 to 74 years of age reduced the risk of flu-related complications by 61 percent. While it's true that in the past, the 65 year and older age group has had the highest vaccination rates across all age groups, close to 11 million people in this age bracket still go unvaccinated. CDC projects that even a 5 percent increase in vaccination in this age group would prevent 35,000 illnesses and close to 3,200 hospitalizations.

While flu season typically begins in October, there's still time to beat the flu.
