Flu News: FluLaval^® Quadrivalent Approved for Infants 6 Months and Older

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that it has approved the use of FluLaval^® Quadrivalent (influenza vaccine) for infants 6 months and older. Previously, it was only approved for use in adults and children over the age of 3.

This is exciting news for providers, who have previously had to stock two separate pre-filled syringes: one for infants 6 months and older, and one for adults and children over the age of 3. This newly expanded age indication will now allow providers to use FluLaval^® Quadrivalent for all qualified patients over the age of 6 months.

Influenza in young children is more severe than the common cold. Children in the 6 month to 5 year age group who are otherwise healthy, are at an especially high risk simply because of their age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "each year an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized because of influenza complications."

While more than 131 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccine have been distributed at this time, there are still many adults and children who have not yet received this preventative vaccine. Since the vaccine typically takes up to 2 weeks before antibodies develop to begin protecting the individual, it is recommended to get vaccinated before the flu spreads to your area.
