Community Immunity

Date: October 03, 2016

In their lifetime, the average adult will spend over 90,000 hours at work. More often than not, our jobs require us to come into contact with colleagues, employees, or customers. If you or one of the individuals you interact with throughout your work day has the flu, then the spread of the virus moves from person to person like quicksand throughout the workplace. While some may choose to take a sick day, or limit their contact with other associates, the flu vaccine is said to be the single best way to protect yourself and your employees from the flu each year. That means the flu vaccine is your company's best shot at maintaining a healthy, productive workforce this fall and winter.

This idea of providing protection through immunization is called community immunity. According to Vaccines.gov, "when a critical portion of a community is immunized against a contagious disease, most members of the community are protected against that disease because there is little opportunity for an outbreak. Even those who are not eligible for certain vaccines-such as infants, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals-get some protection because the spread of contagious disease is contained."

Flu season is just around the corner, and the best way to protect yourself, your colleagues, and your community against the flu is to get a flu vaccine. If you are an employer, consider hosting a flu clinic for your employees. If all of your employees get vaccinated, they can help stop the flu in its tracks. When they interact with someone ill, rather than contracting and spreading the flu, they can fight it and stop it from going any further. If you are an employee, talk to your supervisor about hosting a flu clinic, and let them know of the many ways healthy, flu-free employees can benefit not only the company, but the entire community.
