Back to School - Flu Vaccine

With summer coming to a close and school getting back into full swing, parents are spending a lot of time to make sure their children have everything they need for the upcoming school year. New school supplies, new clothes, a healthy breakfast, and plenty of sleep. But how about a flu vaccine? This may be one thing that parents overlook, while in fact it should be at the top of their list. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "nearly 60 million school days are lost each year due to colds or the influenza virus." Although everyone is at risk to get the flu, children in school are considered at high risk because they are in close contact with one another, and share classroom materials.

The CDC reports that "each day, about 55 million students and 7 million staff attend the more than 130,000 public and private schools in the United States." By taking proper precautions, schools can help to reduce the spread of the influenza virus for one fifth of the country's population. It's not too late for your patients to protect themselves with a flu vaccine before the flu season begins in October; and providers are encouraged to remind and educate parents of the heightened risk their children face when it comes to contracting the flu.
